Remembering Kurt

Kurt

Nest of Salt

During another exchange of emails I was reminded of another mysterious ‘hook’ that Kurt used in one of the songs.  The ‘hook’ came from a conversation about the memory loss.  Kurt was asking me what I was going to do in the future to ‘reclaim’ my hidden memories.  I used the metaphor that it was like sticking my head into a ‘freezer.’  I told him it was like the meat (deep mystical themes) was too much for my immature digestion.   So, to me, it was like I was putting ‘pork chops’ into a freezer bag and storing it away in a deep freeze to thaw out and use at a later time.

Salt trucks dumping salt from the ‘nest’ where it was stored.

I had spoken to other friends in the past and they had first hand knowledge and experience how fast and deep I could bury and ‘freeze’ a memory in the ‘deep freeze’ of the unconscious mind.  I was constantly ‘forgetting’ events we had participating in a week prior with my friends.  One of my friends worked for the City Street Department.  He was part of the crew who would be out shoving and spreading ‘salt’ on the roads during the cold season when ice and snow formed on the road.  I made a joke about finding a shovel and hitting a mound of salt.   My friend told me,

“Your going to need more than a mound of salt.  Your going to need a whole nest of salt.”

I was confused by the ‘nest of salt’ reference.  My mind went to a hornets nest or bee hive and I thought of ‘salt bee’s’ flying off to the ocean and humming back with a ‘grain of salt’ at a time to fill up a whole nest of salt.  My friend laughed and said that was what him and his co-workers were and that is what he wanted his bosses to think when they said ‘nest of salt.’  He told me it was a slang term him and his co-workers had came up with.  They would be out in the field spreading the ‘salt’ on streets when the weather got bad trying to stay a jump ahead of the ‘icing’ process on the city streets.  When a truck ran empty of salt — they would call in on the radio that they were returning to the ‘nest’ for another load.  Some how, in the radio jargon that got shortened down to ‘code’ it became standard for them to use ‘nest of salt’ in reference to returning from the field back to ‘home base’ for another load.  The workers at the ‘base’ had to prepare another load for the truck upon it’s return.

The Salt March, also known as the Salt Satyagraha began with the Dandi March on March 12, 1930, and was an important part of the Indian independence movement.

By the time I had spoke to Kurt about it, I had seen the movie Gandhi where he starts a revolution with a ‘mound of salt.’  To me, it was a spiritual metaphor.  My hidden memories represented ‘hidden knowledge’ given to me by the ‘hand of the divine.’  Kurt and I had spoken about Plato’s assessment that ‘true knowledge’ was not something your learned as much as it was something your ‘recalled’ from the spirit.

Platonic epistemology holds that knowledge is innate, so that learning is the development of ideas buried deep in the soul, often under the midwife-like guidance of an interrogator. In several dialogues by Plato, Socrates presents the view that each soul existed before birth with the Form of the Good and a perfect knowledge of everything. Thus, when something is “learned” it is actually just “recalled.”

Government authorities were keeping people in poverty by taxing them for something that could be had for free.  This is the way I felt ‘religions’ were working in the world.  Instead of sending people on a path to find their own ‘nest of salt’ that would thaw their own ‘hidden memories’ and ‘hidden knowledge’ — people of the world were being ‘taxed’ by religious authorities and forced into ‘false beliefs’ systems which in my mind kept people in poverty.   During my mystical visions with the divine (through NDE’s and such) this was the reference to the ‘poverty’ most ‘spiritual teachers’ made a reference to.  I found a quote from Jesus derived from an anceint text that captures the heart of it.

But the kingdom «of God» is within you and it is without you. «Those who come to know themselves shall find it, and when you come to know yourselves» then you shall know that you are the Sons of the living Father. Yet if you do not know yourselves then you are impoverished and you are poverty.”   Source:  Gospel of Thomas #3

I felt that we were all like Gandhi looking for our own ‘nest of salt’ in an effort to thaw out the memories for the sake of finding our true identity within which led to the ‘freedom from opposition’ from ‘false beliefs’ or the ‘taxation’ by worldly religious authorities.

When Kurt asked for my observation from my study of how I felt people were being supressed and oppressed by the authorities of the world, the answer was simple in my mind.   Shame through guilt.  If you didn’t believe as you were told to believe — you where ‘doomed to the world’s version of hell-fire and damnation.  I told Kurt,

“My Dad done told me I have been to the other side over a 1000 times. I don’t recall it all the time but memories seep up from the unconscious from time to time and their is no such thing as a lake of fire on the other side.  Fire is material and the spiritual realm is void of material and physical things.  It is a metaphor gone wrong.”

When I spoke to Kurt in 1986 — there wasn’t as much research on the subject of the near-death experience where people offer their testimonals through the Internet or published books.  One of the common traits from thousands of people world wide is the ‘visual’ of encountering a ‘light’ brighter than the sun.  (A rapid movement toward and/or sudden immersion in a powerful light. Communication with the light. Source: Wikipedia.

  • This speck of light was brighter than something that would immediately blind you. It was brighter than a million billion carbon arcs, or welder’s torches, anything you can possibly compare it to. It was the brightest thing I’d ever seen in my life. (Thomas Sawyer)
  •  The light was incredibly bright, like sitting in the middle of a light bulb. (Pam Reynolds)
  • While Warmack was in a coma in the hospital when he became aware of something “in the back of me, like a beam of light, brighter than the sun, brighter than any light I had ever seen.”
  • As I neared the end of the tunnel, I saw the most brilliant yellow light coming toward me. I was beginning to feel warm. The nearer the light got, the warmer I felt.  (Beth Hammond)
  • The light burst forth before me, filling everything with brightness, and I was coming upon it impossibly fast. Oh, my gosh, I thought, it’s brighter than the sun.  (RaNelle Wallace)
  • Ahead the light became brighter and brighter until it overtook the darkness and left me standing in a paradise of brilliant light. (Dannion Brinkley)
  • I traveled very slowly along a tunnel toward a bright light, and I could feel an overwhelming sense of warmth and peace and whiteness.(Helen)
  • The light was brighter than hundreds of suns, but didn’t hurt her eyes. She had never seen anything as luminous or as golden as this light, and she immediately understood it was entirely composed of love, all directed at her. (Kimberly Clark Sharp)
  • My first visual memory was looking forward and seeing a brilliant bright light, almost like looking directly at the sun.” (Robin Michelle Halberdier)

Light is life in a vehicle of divinity, and might be thought of as an expression of the One. We stand at the center of our own creation because at the center is the sun and the light of the One. We exist as a preordained Idea manifest within the Self. As an image of the One, so is the One an image of us; our minds manifest through the physical body as the One manifests through the body of the sun. Life is a solar idea. Carl Jung

I told Kurt about my own immersion into the light and how I felt the worldly minds had turned it upside down and inside out.  I told him how I felt it was like waking up in the morning when you opened your eyes after being lost in the darkness of one’s own dreams for the night.  When you opened your eyes in the morning — it took time to adjust to the physical light of the world.  I told Kurt it was the same thing on the other side.  It was like waking up after a long sleep.  (See: Gospel of Truth 26–27 ) I felt many people associated ‘clouds’ with heaven where I associated clouds with damp, dark, cold and wet.  This would be the ‘dark realm’ or what many would consider ‘hell.  ‘Heaven’ (on the other hand in my mind after my near-death episode) was a realm filled with warmth and intense light brighter than any fire in the world — including the surface of the hottest thing in our known world — the sun itself.

This was the conversation Kurt and I shared in 1986 where the ‘slang’ usage of ‘nest of salt’ came into play.

One Response so far.
